According to a recent report released by the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, over 135,000 Puerto Ricans have relocated to the U.S. Mainland after Hurricane Maria. It is estimated that the majority have settled in Florida.
Migration figures of incoming Puerto Ricans to the U.S. can be estimated, but there are many questions that are left unanswered. Clearly, this migration will transform Florida's landscape in multiple respects and many are taking notice.
That is why leaders in the Puerto Rican community around the state of Florida have concluded that more information is needed about the current status of Florida's Puerto Rican community and their future. In addition to the data, a non-partisan organization was needed to aid in the effort of disseminating information to all Florida Puerto Rican organizations and beyond. This led to the formation of the Puerto Rican Alliance of Florida (PRAF), a 501c(3) non-profit, non-partisan, organization.
The PRAF’s main goal is to unify Florida's Puerto Rican community and provide a central hub of information to educate, engage, and mobilize our community in a nonpartisan, data-driven way- especially in the aid of those displaced by Hurricane Maria and the ensuing hardships endured by our people. The center-piece of our efforts is The “Nuestro Futuro” Symposium.
